To install a Gate spring to a wooden door, you will need the following items:
drill
Gate spring
rivet
screw

Step 1: Determine the side of the door
Find out which side is the "hand" side of the door, as this is the side where most door springs are placed. In most cases, the door spring will be attached to the hinge, but it can also be attached to the frame if the door has jambs. In this example we'll show you how to install a door spring onto the hinge.
Step 2: Install the Top of the Door Spring
Use a drill to remove one of the existing screws from the door hinge. Then rest the top of the door spring against the hinge and secure that section in place with the removed screws. At the same stage you will need to pre-drill a hole in the top of the door spring for the second screw and use the new screw to hold it in place.
Note: Before securing the door spring in place, make sure its adjustment is at the top.

Step 3: Secure the bottom of the door spring
Place the bottom of the gate spring against the fence post and secure it in place with the screws.
Step 4: Install rivets/nails
The next stage will include how to tension the door springs. First you need to place rivets/nails into the bottom holes of the door spring to hold it in place.

Step 5: Adjust Tension
Use a tension wrench (also called a tie rod) that usually comes with the door spring and insert it into the hole in the top of the door spring to adjust the tension of the spring system. Place a second rivet/nail into the hole in the top of the spring and open the door to test the new tension to see if it closes as fast as you want. You may need to do this a few times to get the correct door closing speed you need.
Step 6: Repair Tension
Once you find the correct tension, you can leave the rivets/nails in place to maintain the tension as needed. This prevents the points at the top of the system from turning. Failure to do so may result in loss of tension.
